Why I Became a Hypnotherapist: My Journey From Anxiety to Helping Bali & Jakarta's Highest Performers Find Their Way Back

Before I became a clinical hypnotherapist, I was a kid who cried during floods, lay awake convinced my parents wouldn't make it home, and had panic attacks I couldn't explain. By my teens, my body had joined the conversation β€” allergic asthma, a three-week hospitalization for an undiagnosed illness, a near-fatal reaction to antibiotics, and eventually a rare autoimmune diagnosis. I lived the two things I now spend my career helping other people untangle: a mind that wouldn't stop bracing for danger, and a body that was quietly keeping score of it.

I share the fuller version of that story here. What I want to talk about in this post is what came after β€” how that experience became the reason I now work almost exclusively with C-level executives, founders, and managers who look, on paper, like the last people who'd need help.

The high performer's version of "I'm fine"

Most of my clients don't walk in describing anxiety or burnout. They describe a problem. A decision they keep circling without landing on. A short fuse with their team that doesn't match who they think they are. A body that's started failing them β€” insomnia, gut issues, a jaw that won't unclench β€” right as their business hits its best year yet.

That disconnect is familiar to me, because I lived it. High-achieving, driven people are often exceptionally good at managing symptoms and terrible at asking what's underneath them. In my sessions, I see the same handful of struggles again and again, regardless of industry or nationality:

  • Burnout that rest doesn't fix β€” because it isn't only about hours worked, it's a nervous system stuck "on."

  • Decision fatigue and analysis paralysis at the exact moments that call for clarity.

  • Difficulty delegating or trusting others makes them overwhelm with tasks, often traced to an old belief that safety equals control.

  • A quiet loss of direction β€” success by every external metric, disconnection from why any of it matters.

  • Anxiety and low-grade depression that get managed with productivity instead of addressed.

  • Strained relationships and marriages as work absorbs the emotional bandwidth that used to go home.

  • Physical symptoms β€” autoimmune flare-ups, chronic tension, disrupted sleep β€” that show up long before the mind admits anything is wrong.

None of this makes someone weak or broken. It makes them a nervous system that has been very effective at surviving, for a very long time, using strategies that no longer fit the life they've built.

From personal healing to a professional calling

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and was certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists in 2020. Since then, I've trained as a Polyvagal Trauma Therapy practitioner and am currently a year into Compassionate Inquiry training β€” the approach developed by physician Dr. Gabor MatΓ©, which is built around locating the root of a person's suffering rather than managing its symptoms. I work between Bali and Jakarta, and over the years I've sat with clients across ages, industries, and nationalities β€” many of them founders, managers, and C-level leaders under real, sustained pressure.

What changed everything for me wasn't a textbook. It was my own first hypnotherapy session, which I went into openly skeptical. I didn't expect a fast shift in perspective on things I'd been stuck inside of for years. I completed more than twenty sessions, and what I found, piece by piece, was that acknowledging what I felt β€” without shame, without needing to fix it immediately β€” was the actual key. My anxiety eased. I began to understand how directly my mental state was tied to my autoimmune condition. I realized I had been living in a near-constant state of fight-or-flight, and my body had simply been trying, in its own overprotective way, to keep me safe.

That's the thread that runs through every session I now facilitate: we don't just manage the symptom in front of us β€” we go looking for what it's actually protecting.

Why root-cause work matters more for people who perform well

Here's what I've learned working with high performers specifically: the more capable someone is, the more sophisticated their coping mechanisms tend to be β€” and the harder those mechanisms are to spot, including by the person using them. A brilliant negotiator who can't rest. A CEO who over-functions for everyone except themselves. A founder whose "healthy ambition" quietly became an inability to sit still with uncertainty.

Conventional advice β€” sleep more, delegate more, take a holiday β€” often fails this group not because it's wrong, but because it doesn't touch the layer where the pattern actually lives. Hypnotherapy works differently: it accesses the subconscious mind, where the beliefs, memories, and emotional associations driving those patterns are actually stored, so the shift isn't cosmetic β€” it's structural.

What I want for the people I work with

My goal was never to erase struggle or hand someone a shortcut around it. It's to help driven, capable people reconnect with the direction, self-trust, and internal quiet that got buried somewhere between the first promotion and the tenth. I believe healthy ambition and genuine wellbeing aren't in competition β€” they're supposed to run on the same track. When they don't, that's usually a sign something underneath needs attention, not that the person needs to try harder.

If you're a founder, manager, or executive who has the outward markers of success and an inward sense that something's off, know this: it isn't a discipline problem, and it isn't something you're supposed to just push through. Sometimes the clearest answers aren't the ones you haven't found yet outside yourself β€” they're the ones your subconscious has been holding onto, waiting for the right conditions to be understood.
